Re-Storying and Re-Covering: Coded Competencies in Theology, Faith, and Wellness in African American Communities
Join the Wake Forest University School of Divinity Faith COMPASS Center in partnership with the 1Love Festival Artistic Soul Conversation for “Coded Competencies,” a summer institute where we explore re-storying as both method and practice. Rooted in the long tradition of African American communities, re-storying draws on body, art, music, and words to counter distorted narratives, nurture wholeness, and promote healing. Together, we will engage in thought-provoking discussions, creative explorations, and hands-on exercises that illuminate how re-storying—transmitted through generations—acts as a “coded” language of resilience and creation. Come discover new tools and perspectives as we journey toward healing, faith, and wellness in community.

DJ SK
A Performer like DJ SK is of a dying breed. For over a decade, the indefatigable performer has established some of the region’s most successful parties, championed a generation of local artists, and invested heavily in the musical culture in his community. Born Jodi Kimball, SK caught the DJ bug early on, thanks to an unlikely scratch tutorial on Sesame Street. Acquiring turntables soon after acquiring a driver’s license, SK was reared in hip-hop at its arguable precipice, lending a hand in shaping SK’s technically exceptional manner of mixing.
